Born out of a copyright conflict, Dubplate Music Publishers is the brainchild of legendary reggae producer, Augustus “Gussie” Clarke. In 1982 Gussie produced The Mighty Diamonds hit track, Pass the Kutchie, using the rhythm from a previously recorded track entitled, Full Up by the group, Sound Dimension. Later that same year, the London based Musical Youth, re-recorded the Mighty Diamonds version and re-named it Pass the Dutchie – it became an enormous international hit. At that time there was a general lack of knowledge regarding licensing and copyright ownership which shrouded Jamaica’s music market and as a result the true writers of the original rhythm and lyrics were not rightfully compensated or accredited for their works on Musical Youth’s re-recording. Years after Pass the Dutchie was released the matter was resolved but not before many hours of legal arbitration and wrangling. The experience pushed Gussie to vow that he would never again be part of such a lengthy, unpleasant copyright dispute, thus the emergence, a year later, of Dubplate Music Publishers. Today, Dubplate boasts an extensive catalogue of popular writers, artists and songs which continues to grow each day. We are now the largest music publishers in Jamaica, administering catalogues for most of the leading production houses and recording artistes.
